The adult sex toy industry in 2020 worldwide was estimated at around $33.62 Billion. But this review will focus on the MLM model of business with a touch on the products.
Pure Romance has adopted to promote their products with the MLM model of business but in reality, is it a profitable model for the company and its consultants or not?
I have to say it is a novel idea to sell a product that is rather private in nature in the privacy of someone’s home; after all, you only want to share this type of purchase with friends or those of like mind.

Who Is Pure Romance
Pure Romance is an MLM (multi-level-marketing) company that sells sex toys, sexual enhancement items, and other “romantic” items to women in the United States.
Pure Romance was originally founded in 1993 by Pat Brisben under the name of “Slumber Parties.”
Chris Cicchinelli, Pat’s son, became involved in the company in 2000 when they began using the MLM model of business to promote their product; by the time 2003 rolled around, the company decided to change their name to “Pure Romance,” which remains the same today.
What Is MLM (Multilevel Marketing)?
An MLM, or Multilevel Marketing company, is a type of business that relies on its sales force to recruit additional salespeople below them, thus creating a “downline.” These salespeople then receive commissions on their own sales, as well as the sales of people they’ve recruited into the MLM.
While some people view MLMs as pyramid schemes or get-rich-quick opportunities that make up for their low pay with quick money from one’s own downline, other people use MLMs to actually make an active income.
While others work hard at their MLM business and never break even so to be on the safe side, it’s important to do your research before deciding whether or not an MLM is right for you.

Pure Romance MLM Review
Right off the bat, I noticed that Pure Romance has a Better Business Bureau rating of 1.92 out of 5.0, which doesn’t say much for the products or the company’s service. The reviews talk of poor customer service, broken items, and the inability to get their products after purchase or a refund.
Pure Romance discloses on their website they have 30,000 active consultants; while this may be true, please note these numbers include 6 different countries.
I searched and searched for reviews from Pure Romance Consultants but only found reviews with all roses and sweetness but; on the other hand, are the negative reviews being censored? I don’t have an answer to this. Some MLM companies are so good the representatives love working for them. Is Pure Romance one of these companies?
Pure Romance consultants call themselves party planners, educators, or entertainers. So; to put this differently, a consultant who is not certified in sex-life education will try to teach others how they can improve their “sexual lifestyle.” What if someone has a real issue with sexual dysfunction and thinks that you are an expert? Is a consultant trained as a sex educator or counselor? No, they have very little training.
Imagine calling yourself an entertainer in the sex toy industry: in a word, isn’t that kind of like calling yourself a call girl? I mean just think about it!
How Can You Become A Pure Romance Consultant?
There are two ways to become a Pure Romance Consultant:
- Join through the Pure Romance website
- Join under someone who invites you
Price To Join
To join the company you have to purchase a kit which comes in three different sizes.
- Starter kit $219
- Delux kit $439
- Premium kit $659
The bigger the kit you buy the larger the commission percentage you make. So, let me get this right, the more money you spend and buy from the company the more you make. Now, doesn’t that just make money for the company and not necessarily for the consultant?
Then to remain active a consultant has to spend $200 on products every 60 days and if they don’t do this they only make a 15% commission. In one year you spend $1200 plus the kits which is only the minimal amount a consultant has to spend in one year. Most spend much more than that in inventory although the company will ship directly to the customer.
Pure Romance Compensation Plan
I looked for an image of the compensation plan but all of them are similar to the income disclosure statement below. So I will refer you to the compensation plan video coming up next.
Video Of The Pure Romance Compensation Plan
Before you watch this video keep in mind that no men are allowed to be a Pure Romance Consultant yet these 2 men are telling you how you will make money; not to mention they are making it all sound like you can make big bucks.
Pros And Cons
Pure Romance MLM has a few pros as well as cons. On the positive side, we will list a few pros and on the negative side, we’ll talk about some cons.
Pros
- Been in business for 28 years with the MLM model for 21 years
- The products are a novelty
Cons
- Average medium income per year is $111
- No men allowed at any party or as a consultant
- The kits to join are expensive
- A consultant has to buy products to remain active
- BBB product ratings are horrible
- Pure Romance goes so far as to say one of the creams will tighten the vagina-WHAT?
- Consultants are told to say they are trained to help with sexual dysfunction
- Consultants are coached to say “what happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas”, which makes me wonder what they do at these parties.
Pure Romance Income Disclosure
It is important to realize that Pure Romance Partners can earn income in different forms such as selling products, bonuses, and earned vacations. These figures are from 2020 and are the year on average, so generally speaking, the “average total earnings” are for the entire year of 2020.

Please make note, the average median income for a consultant is $111 and that is before expenses and taxes.
What this image says is that you will spend a minimum of $1200 just so you can make a higher commission yet unless you are in the top 0.5% or above you will not break even.
According to a report by Fundera, “Only 25% of MLM participants turn a profit.“
Please note that this says “turn a profit.” It does not say that 25% make money. After you take out expenses, very few make money. Only 0.05% made the big bucks that all MLM companies try to make us think everyone earns.
Is Pure Romance MLM A Scam?
A scam is a fraudulent business where the company is dishonest in what they offer; in light of this, I don’t think the products produced by Pure Romance are a scam, although they are expensive and some make claims that can not possibly be true like a cream that shrinks the vagina. While some may benefit from the products, on the whole, I do not believe the MLM portion is a scam, but they do border a scam.
Is Pure Romance MLM A Pyramid Scheme?
To answer this, I have to go off of the definition of a pyramid scheme, and with this in mind, I have to say Pure Romance is not a pyramid scheme, be as it may, it does closely resemble one, as do all MLM companies.

The Problem With MLM Companies In General
According to an FTC Government file, an MLM operation does not have a clearly defined definition. It calls MLM’s a” product-based pyramid scheme“ and compares it to an illegal chain letter. You know the letters you receive in the mail, it says to put a dollar in an envelope with a copy of the letter and send one to 10 people. Then if you do this, you will make a ridiculous amount of money.

The FTC Government document also states that MLM “is inherently flawed, unfair, and deceptive.”
My Recommendations Regarding Pure Romance MLM
I began this review wanting to give it a positive rating because I believe everyone needs a break but, in light of my search results it is not appearing favorable for Pure Romance.
Not only do the products have a poor rating but the MLM model is very complicated and very very few make money. A consultant has to pay a high dollar just to qualify for a higher commission payout.
So, in light of my findings, the bottom line is, I will not be recommending Pure Romance MLM company as a way to make money from home.
